In many remote communities, high schools simply don’t exist. Students must leave home and live in a youth hostel or boarding school. For many, this is financially out of their reach. Leading Star Boarding School in Putao exists to provide opportunities for the ethic minorities to receive a high school education. There is no tuition, and room is provided. The students are asked to provide their own food, but many cannot. They are accepted anyway.
In addition to the rigorous academic schedule, the students begin and end each day with prayer and Bible study. Growth in Christian discipleship is a priority among the students and staff.
Passing all 10 matriculation exams is very difficult, made even more so because of the rote memorization required. The result is low graduation rates in nearly all high schools. Leading Star successfully graduates 30% of its students — an improvement over the public school’s 10-20% graduation rate.
ACM has supported the school since 2010. In addition to providing $200 monthly, we invested $12,000 to provide a new kitchen, dining area, new toilets and showers.
