A DIVINE APPOINTMENT, AN ANSWERED PRAYER
In 2015, ACM sent experienced OB nurse Linda Pettit to Myanmar. Through interviewing scores of people in rural areas, she saw a need for more trained nurses to provide health care. During her visit, she also attended a worship service at Hope Children’s Home (another ACM ministry). There, a nurse-educator named Lucy stood and asked for prayers — she wanted to open her own nursing school. Lucy and Linda met, and the rest is history: the Samaritan School of Nursing was born.
The school is located on the Myanmar Community Development Center (MCDC) campus. Each student completes a six-month training program as well as a hospital internship. After graduation, some students return to work in their home areas. Others accept positions in hospitals and nursing homes.
The Samaritan School partners with FAME and Bring Good News International (BGNI) to provide health care clinics, special seminars (e.g., midwifery), and Community Health Evangelism (CHE) training. Additionally, Lucy and her students provide free weekly clinics on campus, and often travel on weekends to hold clinics in neighboring villages. FAME funded the MCDC building where health care clinics are held, and further supports the program by offering scholarships to some students.
In the future we hope to expand course offerings, including care and therapy for children and adults with disabilities.
